The summer solstice was considered the most important event of the solar year in ancient times. Fire was celebrated on this day as the symbol of abundance, purity and fertility and to this day fire and fireworks are one of the central elements in the Festival of Sant Joan, illluminating the skies of Barcelona every year!El solstici d'estiu era considerat l'esdeveniment més important de l'any solar en l'antiguitat. El foc era festejat durant aquest dia com a símbol d'abundància, puresa i fertilitat i fins avui en dia el foc i focs d'artifici són dos dels elements centrals en la festa de Sant Joan, il·luminant el cel de Barcelona cada any!
The biggest element of the festival of Sant Joan is fire. The flame to light the fires is called the Flama del Canigó which is taken to different villages every year.
This night there are bonfires everywhere in Barcelona. Old furniture is often used for the bonfire to symbolise a gesture of out with the old - in with the new!
L'element més important d'aquesta festivitat és el foc. La flama que es fa servir per encendre les fogueres s'anomena Flama del Canigó, la qual es portada a diferents poblacions cada any. A aquesta nit hi ha fogueres per tot Barcelona. Mobles vells són emprats sovint per a les fogueres, simbolitzant un gest de fora amb tot el que és vell i benvinguda a tot el que és nou.
There is a strong tradition of fireworks and firecrackers in Catalonia coming from the days of the arab invasions. Each neighbourhood in Barcelona has its own firework display along with local all-night bonfires fuelled by old furniture! In the neighbourhoods you can also find dancing and celebrations in the squares, street parties, music and entertainment.
Hi ha una forta tradició de focs d'artifici i petards a Catalunya provinent dels dies d'invasions àrabs. Cada barri de Barcelona té la seva pròpia exhibició de focs d'artifici junt amb fogueres que duren tota la nit alimentades per mobiliari vell! Als barris també es poden trobar balls i celebracions a les places, festes al carrer, música i entreteniment.
